Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Airport Showcase 2018


Hosted by the Airport Authority of Hong Kong, the annual Smart Airport Technovation Conference and Exhibition 2018 was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This year’s theme was on the Internet of Things (IoT), as the Airport Authority seeks to pursue avenues towards a smarter and more connected airport – driven by the power of digital innovation. Invited by the Airport Authority, MotherApp was one of the exhibitors for the conference.

With a booth to showcase our products and services, the Motherapp team has chosen to display our digital innovation capabilities in a live demonstration under the theme of “Connected Airport through IoT Sound and Light”.

Using artificial intelligence (AI), IoT and data analytics, our live demonstration involved the use of AI-powered video analytics to detect human behaviour and object recognition. This analytic feature utilises CCTV cameras installed at certain areas of concern at the airport, MTR stations, and selected escalators where safety has become an issue due to large objects obstructing the walkway (i.e. luggages).

With a highly sensitive and busy hub like the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), safety and security is a huge priority. Thus, with our smart city innovations, we hope to first and foremost address these concerns, and then – subsequently contribute towards a smoother deployment of staff and operations, by optimising the use of manpower with advanced technology.

Using connected IoT hardware can also help in a more efficient crowd management during peak travel periods.

As an example, you can see in the video below; when an item such as a large baggage is detected at the escalator, a sound and lighting trigger will be activated to remind said passenger to take the lift instead for safety purposes.

This is done in an integrated IoT environment where Motherapp’s Smart City solution platform will send signals in real-time to respective connected lights and speakers, that have been pre-instructed to act upon these real-time triggers, and perform its pre-determined actions.

Besides our self-developed AI video analytics technology and deep-learning capabilities in Smart City Environment – with an intimate network of solution partners, we are better able to offer an all-encompassing comprehensive solution.

This end-solution covers audio, visual, and even pre-set environmental triggers like lighting and sound, on top of real-time internal communications – so as to provide a holistic environment for optimal detection and incident prevention. In time-sensitive, precarious situations, this comprehensive network of software (IoT sensors, triggers) and hardware communicators will make a world of difference solely based on the simple act of connectivity.

In addition, by working with dedicated IoT hardware partners, we are able to obtain the best quality hardware for optimal performance. For CCTV cameras, our partner offers a variety of visuals such as four different sensors in one camera to observe different angles, a HD 360 panoramic fish-eye camera that presents a sharp image even when zoomed in, and thermal camera for human and vehicle detection etc., which gives us the highest degree of accuracy for data analytic purposes.

Notwithstanding, with an integrated IoT sound intelligence system,  sensors within designated speakers are able to detect a variety of sounds. By applying it within the airport environment, sounds that can be detected include cries for help, echoes from the impact of a person falling down, or even variations in tonality of a person’s voice, which is tremendously helpful in threatening scenarios.

Through integrating the innovative capabilities of these different hardwares with our software expertise, we are able to offer a total solution experience for our clients – whichever situation or environment they apply the above to. The adaptability and flexibility of our integrated technology has in fact already been deployed in a variety of scenarios – smart city, theme park crowd management, manufacturing plants, etc.
